The Hunter House is a unique home in Natchez. This is the only gothic styled pre civil war home in the Natchez historic district. The original owner was a Methodist minister that lived in the home just two short years before moving back to Pennsylvania (financial problems may have forced the move.).
The home has very large rooms but only three guest rooms. So you can expect a peaceful stay with such a small number of guests.
While staying at the Hunter House feel free to wonder about and view the collection of beautiful things the owner has collected over the years. Plenty of books on the history of Natchez are available.
While we are a bed and breakfast we don’t offer breakfast in house. Instead, as an added treat, guests will have breakfast at the Castle Restaurant at the beautiful mansion Dunlieth. Included in your visit to Dunlieth is a complimentary tour of the mansion.
Natchez is a great town for walking and the Hunter House sits in a prime location for walkers. You are a quick three blocks to the historic downtown that is filled with unique shops and great restaurants. If you prefer to view the Mississippi river an easy three block walk takes you to the bluffs and the recently completed National Park Service trails along the bluffs and river.
**An additional bonus you receive ONLY when staying at the Hunter House is a complimentary motorized tour of the historic sites of Natchez. A $40 value per couple. |

I’m Eric Williams and I have conducted Natchez Ghost Tours, LLC in Natchez for more than 4 and ½ years. Of course with someone who works with ghosts you would also expect them to live with a few. The Hunter house is one of many haunted houses in Natchez. When you stay with us you can be on your own ghost hunt. A short story below gives you an idea of one previous resident. We have at least one child spirit in the home. This child is heard on stormy nights between 2-2:30AM. The child plays with marbles and continues to roll them across the floor. Even though there was carpet on the floors earlier and now area rugs you can clearly hear the marble rolling over wooden floors. One spirit in the home seems to be trapped. I have been really frightened in this home on several occasions. The front doors have been violently yanked on from the inside. I was just entering the entry hall one evening when this happened. Before I entered the entry hall I heard a male voice and then could hear and see the front doors being yanked aggressively inward. When I stepped into the entry the banging doors stopped and footsteps tore through the entry hall and down the hallway, ending before the sunroom. I was on the phone with my brother at the time and the energy from the spirit dropped our land line phone call and scared the stuffing out of me.
I moved into the home at 611 N Union almost 7 years ago. The first couple of weeks here I was by myself, or at least thought I was. A sweet older couple had run this house for 8 years as a bed and breakfast. The wife became ill but didn’t want to leave her home. She eventually passed away in the house. She was known to be a big coffee drinker, 3 pots a day. Early one morning I entered the sunroom at the back of the house with a just poured cup of coffee in my hand. From this room you can enter the kitchen, outdoors, hallway, pantry and master bathroom. The door to the bath was solidly closed. While I was looking out at the driveway I noticed the bathroom door begin to vibrate and shake. I thought the central air had come on but realized it was off. I next thought an animal, perhaps squirrel, but then suddenly the vibrating stopped. When I looked down I saw the door knob turning. I backed away from the door a couple of feet. The door slowly opened all the way back and there was no one there. The room was empty. I wondered if I had somehow woke up the earlier lady of the house that was so fond of coffee. One night while giving the ghost tour we stopped in front of this house. The guests on the tour that night got an eyeful. I had just told them about the coffee and the bathroom door. Several people on the right side of the bus began yelling that they saw an older woman glide by the front door, clearly holding a cup and saucer in her hand. I’ve never seen the ghost myself but I know she’s here looking after her home. I think a kind spirit with a caffeine issue.
This is just one story out of many that have happened in this home while I’ve been here.
The Hunter house is the only home in the historic district to have gothic details. A Methodist minister named Peter Hunter lived in this home for a short two years and then left the Natchez area. Since Peter the home has had 27 different owners and many many residents over the past 150 years.
When you stay in the 1859 Hunter house feel free to bring your emf’s, digital recorders, camera’s and etc. We just need to be respectful of the other guests spending the night with us.
Thank you and enjoy your stay!
